‘Magic Wand’ hope to beat cancer

Professor Michael Baum, a consultant at University College London Hospital has been carrying out research for the past two years into a special cure for breast cancer.

More than 30 women were cured after receiving just a single dose of radiation in a revolutionary 30 minute operation.
In the procedure, tumours are removed by surgery, at the same time the breast is blasted from the inside using a dose of radiation from a special probe dubbed the ‘magic wand’.

The normal procedure involves surgery followed by a gruelling six-week course of daily two hour radiotherapy sessions. With the new procedure, patients only needed one treatment with the so-called ‘magic wand’.

Researchers are very excited by the results but before it can become available nationally further tests need to be carried out. The research is going to be carried out on patients in Bombay and in Canada.

More than 34,000 in Britain are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
