Pau D'Arco

Pau D'Arco (or Taheebo) is a native tree of the rainforest. The Phytochemical Database at the US Department of Agriculture has now documented pau d'arco as an:

  1. anti-inflammatory
  2. anti-abcess
  3. anti-carcinogenic
  4. anti-viral
  5. anti-malarial
  6. antiseptic and
  7. anti-tumour agent

It is now widely accepted as having potent anti-cancer properties, especially against leukaemia.

It is also used as a treatment for fungal infections and parasitic infections. Taheebo can be found in combination formulas designed to treat Candida infections.

The active ingredient is a phytochemical called lapachol that is found in the bark, but this herb contains at least another 20 active ingredients, all of which also play a role.

The bark is available as a powder that looks like wood chippings. These chippings are then brewed up like a tea (that also tastes like wood chippings). The powder needs to be boiled for at least 8-10 minutes before straining and drinking.

Warning: Very few brands of pau d'arco actually contain any lapachol. It is thought that since in its purest form, the phytochemical only makes up between 2% and 7% of the whole herb, this active constituent is easily lost in processing and transportation.
This herb is very potent and should only be used under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.
